Meat Technology Ireland
Meat Technology Ireland is a research programme co-funded between Enterprise Ireland and the beef and sheepmeat industry in Ireland. MTI is hosted by Teagasc, with Declan Troy, Assistant Director of Research at Teagasc, as the academic sponsor and is headed up by its Director John Colreavy. The companies behind the initiative are ABP Ireland, Ashbourne Meat Processors, Dawn Meats Group, Dunbia (Ireland), Hilton Foods Ireland, Irish Country Meats, Kepak Group, Liffey Meats, and Slaney Foods International.
Teagasc – the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority – is a leading organisation in the fields of agriculture and food research in Ireland. It is a national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities. The primary function of Teagasc is to support science-based innovation in the agri-food sector and the broader bio-economy. Research, development and innovation initiatives supporting meat and dairy processing, cereals and marine food sectors, are the core activities within Teagasc’s food research programme. The annual research portfolio of Teagasc comprises some 300 research projects, carried out by 500 scientific and technical staff in their research centres throughout Ireland.
Teagasc collaborates extensively with national and international universities, research institutes and the food industry. Their Walsh Fellowship programme, which currently supports over 250 postgraduate students in their research centres, enhances this collaboration. They also participate extensively in EU Framework Programmes and they have developed bilateral agreements with research organisations globally.
